Entry of Tesla in India
Elon Musk’s Tesla, a renowned electric vehicle manufacturer under his ownership, is reportedly gearing up to establish its car manufacturing plant in Gujarat, India. Tesla is in the final stages of negotiations to set up its first electric vehicle manufacturing facility in India, with the official announcement expected at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2024.
Elon Musk’s Tesla is actively preparing to open its car manufacturing plant in Gujarat in early 2024. The discussions for establishing Tesla’s first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in India are in the final phase, and there is a possibility of an official announcement during the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2024, according to reports.
The official entry of Tesla into India might be announced at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2024, scheduled to take place in January in Gandhinagar. Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of Tesla, may participate in the summit to announce the company’s entry into the EV manufacturing sector in India. Reports from various media houses in the state suggest that discussions with the government for acquiring the necessary land for the EV manufacturing plant in Gujarat are in the final stages.
As per reports published by Gujarat News and other media outlets, there is a likelihood that Tesla’s manufacturing plant will be located in Sanand, Gujarat, where major car companies like Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, and MG Motor India have their units.
Is MOU signing expected at Vibrant Gujarat?
There is hope that Tesla might sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. Apart from electric cars, the company has expressed interest in establishing a battery manufacturing plant in India. The finalization of the location for the manufacturing plant is expected by the end of this year.
Several states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, have invited Tesla to invest in their respective states, offering incentives for the electric vehicle manufacturer.
However, Tesla is also contemplating exporting its electric vehicles to other countries and is considering port connectivity. Therefore, the company is planning to establish an EV manufacturing plant near the Kandla-Mundra port in Sanand, Gujarat. The final location has not been confirmed yet, and the Gujarat government may provide land in places like Becharaji and Dholera.
Currently, Tesla’s electric cars are not available in India. Importing electric cars to India is expensive due to high import duties, making Tesla cars distant from the Indian market. Therefore, Tesla’s plan is to establish a manufacturing plant in the country, enabling them to sell cars at a more competitive price.
