Now, after 12 long years of waiting, he has expressed his love with a special gift. Ratan Tata has constructed an animal hospital in Mahalakshmi. This hospital, spread over 2.2 acres of land, will cater to the treatment of animals like dogs, cats, and rabbits. This hospital, operational 24×7, will provide medical care for pet animals. Ratan Tata had envisioned building this hospital nearly 12 years ago when he was leaving Tata Sons. The hospital is named Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital, and its operations will be overseen by Tata Trust. It is expected to become operational in March.

Costing 165 Crores

The construction of this hospital incurred a cost of 165 crores. In an interview with the Times of India, Ratan Tata mentioned that he considers himself a pet parent. He understands the anguish of pet owners. He had to face many difficulties for the treatment of his own dog. He recounted an incident when his dog had joint problems, and taking him to the USA for replacement became challenging. He had to deal with several obstacles, including traveling to the University of Minnesota for treatment. After that experience, he decided to open a world-class animal hospital in India. This hospital will provide world-class facilities to domestic animals.

Fulfilling the Dream at the Age of 86

When he stepped down from the chairmanship of Tata Sons in 2012, he got involved in the work of this hospital. Now, after 12 years, his work has been completed. This animal hospital in Mumbai is among the largest hospitals in the country. It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t Tata’s first hospital venture. The Tata Trust started India’s first cancer hospital, Tata Memorial Hospital. Additionally, Tata is involved in the construction and operation of NCPE, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and the Indian Institute of Science-Bengaluru.

Had to Get His Dog Treated in America

He recalled an incident when his dog fell ill, and they had to take him to the University of Minnesota in the USA for joint replacement. However, it was too late, and doctors managed to fit his beloved pet’s joint in a certain condition. After this, he thought of having a world-class animal hospital in Mumbai too. However, he could only start this hospital after retirement.

Tied-Up with 5 Renowned British Hospitals

The responsibility of this hospital has been entrusted to Britain’s famous vet, Dr. Thomas Heathcoat. This hospital has tied up with 5 famous British hospitals including the Royal Veterinary College, London. It also includes an NGO for the care of stray dogs.
