Happy Birthday Ratan Tata: Today, on December 28, one of India’s most prominent entrepreneurs, Ratan Tata, is celebrating his 86th birthday. Ratan Tata needs no introduction – not only is he a successful businessman, but he is also known for his philanthropic endeavors. Born in 1937 in Mumbai to Naval Tata and Sooni Tata, Ratan Tata was raised by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, after his parents separated when he was just 10 years old.

Ratan Tata’s initial education took place in Mumbai, followed by earning a diploma in 1955 from Bishop Cotton School in Shimla and Riverdale Country School in New York. Speaking of his personal life, Ratan Tata never married. In an interview, he revealed a love story from 1962 in Los Angeles, where he was about to get married. Unfortunately, due to the India-China war, the girl’s parents didn’t allow her to come to India. Ratan Tata then returned to India and decided not to marry.

The beginning of a remarkable career 

Ratan Tata commenced his career in 1961 with Tata Steel, a renowned company within the Tata Group. Later in 1975, he pursued business management studies at Harvard Business School. He also holds a degree from Cornell University College of Architecture. Financially, the year 1991 was crucial for India, and after the adoption of liberalization and privatization policies, Ratan Tata became the chairman of the Tata Group. Under his leadership, the group has left a significant mark not only in India but globally.

Tata Group flourished under Ratan Tata’s leadership

In 2004, Ratan Tata decided to take Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) public. Furthermore, Tata made strategic acquisitions in the automotive sector, including the Anglo-Dutch steel manufacturer Corus, the British automotive company Jaguar Land Rover, and the British tea company Tetley. These moves elevated the Tata Group to a global brand. In 2009, Tata fulfilled the dreams of the common people by launching the Nano, the affordable car.

Engaged in philanthropy 

Ratan Tata is not only known for his business acumen but also for his philanthropic activities. He donated $28 million to Cornell University to assist Indian students. Additionally, he contributed $50 million to Harvard Business School for student aid. In 2014, he donated ₹95 crores to support research at IIT Bombay. Moreover, he allocates a significant portion of his income each year to philanthropic activities.

Ratan Tata, with over 12 million followers on Twitter, is one of the most followed Indian industrialists. According to media reports, his net worth is over ₹3,800 crores. As per the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022, Ratan Tata is ranked as the 421st richest person globally. Notably, Tata Sons donates 66% of its earnings to charity.
