Queen Margrethe II revealed her decision to relinquish the royal duties on the 52nd anniversary of her coronation, scheduled for January 14th. She ascended to the throne at the age of 31 after the death of her father, King Frederick IX. The role of monarchy holds significant ceremonial importance in Denmark, and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed the decision in a statement.

In her New Year’s speech, Queen Margrethe II expressed her intention to create a path for her son, Crown Prince Frederik, and announced her abdication on January 14th, marking the 52nd anniversary of her coronation after her father’s passing.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed the decision and offered condolences on the passing of the 83-year-old monarch. He acknowledged Queen Margrethe II’s lifelong dedication and tireless efforts for the state, expressing heartfelt gratitude.

At 6 feet tall, Queen Margrethe II has been one of Denmark’s most beloved public figures, renowned for her down-to-earth demeanor. Often seen casually strolling on Copenhagen’s streets without security, she earned admiration for her warm behavior and contributions as a linguist and designer.

Queen Margrethe II, who also served as a member of the Danish Women’s Air Force unit in her youth, participated in judo syllabus and endurance tests in the snow. At the age of 70, she donned a military jumpsuit and visited Danish troops in southern Afghanistan in 2011. As a queen, she toured the entire country and regularly visited Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Her diverse activities, from being a princess to a military member and her regular visits to Greenland and the Faroe Islands, have contributed to her popularity in Denmark. Queen Margrethe II’s decision to abdicate marks a significant transition in Denmark’s monarchy.
